• Indian Auto LPG: An alternative to diesel and Petrol

As concerns over smog and dense pollution reappear with the approaching winter, the government is encouraging Auto LPG. As a part to improve the air quality, the shift from petrol or diesel to Auto LPG to curb air pollution.

The transport sector is responsible for 14% of CO2 emissions, out of which 60% is greenhouse gas. The fuel combustion in India from 181MT in 1971 has risen to 2,066MT in 2015, which is a 1041% increase.

LPG stands as a viable alternative that has the capability of cleaning the high pollution emission in the transport sector. When LPG is used in the motor combustion of a vehicle, it is known as Auto LPG. LPG consists of propane and butane, and it is extracted as a by-product during oil refining. Currently, all over the world, LPG powers over 27 million vehicles.

It has several benefits over conventional fuel such as petrol or diesel. In India, only a handful of companies manufacture Auto LPG, however, the vehicle can be easily converted into an LPG variant with a few tweaks in the engine.

So, let’s discuss why Auto LPG is better

Let’s face it, the need for sustainable fuel is the need of the hour. As LPG gas has zero global warming potential, it is a cost-effective transition. Here are a few benefits that make Auto LPG the right choice over diesel or petrol.

Lower Harmful Impact on the Environment

We all are aware that LPG has environmental benefits. But are you aware that LPG in combustion engines can reduce global warming?

Yes, that’s right! LPG is the only fuel that has been assigned global warming potential (GWP) zero by the UN international panel for climate change. The reports of tests conducted to compare the level of emission of toxic gases between petrol and LPG shows, LPG contributed 52% lesser carbon monoxide, while 47% less hydrocarbon than petrol.

    Cost-Efficient

As the prices of petrol and diesel are shooting high, a lot of consumers are looking for cheaper alternative fuels today. LPG gas from SHIVGAS is half the cost of petrol and diesel, in terms of cost it is around 40% cheaper than petrol.

It Is Better For Your Engine

Do you know LPG can enhance the engine’s life? Yeah, that’s the truth. Petrol/diesel is a liquid fuel, which can lead to oxidation and eventually rusting of parts. It mainly occurs due to the presence of sulfur in the oil.

Another reason that makes LPG the better choice for a vehicle, is the clean combustion if compared to its counterparts. As the engine is protected from potential damage it ought to last longer and help in reducing the frequency of serving of the engine.

Things To Consider During Conversion To LPG Gas

Even though you are aware of all the advantages of LPG gas, you must take care of a few things before switching to auto LPG.

    LPG Conversion Kit

Vehicles in India are not manufactured with LPG engines, which is why an LPG conversion kit is important. Installing of LPG kit is important, and the products which are available off the market for installation can have questionable safety. It is advisable to reach out professional to get assistance with installation.

    Boot Space

The LPG fuel tank is placed in the boot. So, while transitioning from liquid fuel to LPG, you need enough space in the boot to keep the LPG tank. The bigger the tank, the longer it runs. So, the best is to choose the right size, you need to select the right balance in size and space of the tank and the boot.

    Conclusion

As the government’s scheme and initiative are supporting LPG autos and cars, the transition will be widely visible in the upcoming years. To meet the needs of growing demand, SHIVGAS is offering private LPG gas agency dealerships, to provide cylinders in bulk.

  • Facts You Must Know For Auto LPG Cylinder Testing

The catastrophic future that upholds due to global warming and glacier melting is known to everyone. Auto LPG gas is a step toward a greener and more sustainable future. In the process of transitioning from diesel or petrol to Auto LPG, it is important to be aware of LPG Autogas testing from your gas agency.

According to Petroleum and Explosive Safety Organization(PESO), the LPG containers fitted in the vehicles must be tested through a series of tests to ensure the level of safety in the pressure vessels.

Today, in this blog, we will cover the facts which you must not ignore or LPG Auto testing, as lack of testing can lead to devastating consequences.

    Physical Tests

A series of the physical test must be conducted as the laws mentioned by IS Liquified Petroleum Gas Containers For Automative Use –Specifications.

    • Design Temperature

The design operating temperature of the cylinder shall be from -20 to 65degree Celcius. This is the temperature tested in the cylinders. If the temperature rises or decreases from the mentioned temperature, special tests are conducted that are approved by statutory authority.

    • Wall Thickness

The cylinder is either manufactured of stainless steel or reinforced carbon polymer. The material of the cylinder is responsible for the thickness of the cylinder shell.

    Hydrostatics tests

The test is conducted to check the pressure capacity of the cylinders. Each cylinder shall be subjected to the hydrostatic test, to ensure it is safe to use in Auto LPG. In this process, the pressure inside the cylinder is increased gradually. When the pressure reached the threshold point, it is left for not less than 60 seconds.

In this period, if any bulge or reduction in pressure happens, it symbolizes there is a leak in the cylinder. This helps in discarding the cylinder for the next use.

    Pneumatic Leakage Test

In this, the cylinder is properly fitted as per the recommendation of the manufacturer. An air pressure of at least 2MPa is applied to the unit to perform a leakage test. Immersed in water for a minute, this is left for a minute. It indicates the body of the container and the valve pad joint are safe if there are no bulges or reductions in pressure.

    Bonfire Test

The test is conducted to check the bursting probability of the cylinder. It is put out in specific conditions and then tested under fire conditions. The cylinder is heated until it reaches a specific temperature by burning any fuel as a fire source. In this test, the following observations are measured,

    • Temperature below the cylinder, at minimum two locations, around 750mm apart.
    • Wall temperature at the bottom of the cylinder.
    • If the cylinder length exceeds 2.65m, the wall temperature of the top of the cylinder and center of the cylinder is measured.

    Marking After the Tests

The re-testing of Auto LPG is conducted to save damage to life and property and cause minimal accidents in vehicles due to cylinder bursting. The markings give you knowledge about the testing detail.

    • Every cylinder unit has a unique serial number
    • Tare weight
    • Test Prressure in MPa
    • Year and month of testing.

    Conclusion

Auto LPG is needful to reduce the pollutant in the air. As per recent reports, Kolkata and Delhi are declared one of the most polluted cities in India. As an initiative to reduce air pollution, the government is focusing largely on LPG-powered vehicles.

In this initiative, we at SHIVGAS are ensuring there is no reduction in the supply of gas, and no adulterated or poorly tested cylinder cycle into the market. Our increase in LPG gas agency in West Bengal helps in keeping optimal supply for Auto LPG.

  • Is It Better To Switch From Diesel To LPG?

We cannot stop the use of fossil fuels, but we can shift to cleaner fuels, that is LPG Gas for the automobile. The forerunners are petrol/diesel in the auto industry, however, LPG is becoming the next big thing for the automobile industry as most auto companies or governments are inclining towards cleaner energy. LPG has lesser emissions than diesel vehicles, it produces 96% less NOx than diesel and 68% less NOx than petrol.

LPG Gas is extensively used for domestic fuel purposes, but the introduction of LPG vehicles can make a significant impact on the environment. Being a cleaner fuel, LPG does not produce particulate matter or soot in the air. LPG is recognized as better fuel all over the world and it is used by millions of people worldwide.

A study published in The Lancet Planetary Health has some shocking findings on India’s air quality Index. There is evidence of the adverse effect of air pollution on health. Around 77% of India’s population is exposed to particulate matter air pollution. While the figures do paint a grim picture, change is the need of the hour, and immediate action is required for bringing improvement in the air quality standards.

Why LPG is Better than Diesel

    Less carbon emission

One of the advantages of using LPG gas, it emits lesser harmful chemicals. LPG gas generates less amount of CO2, NOx, and sulfur into the air. It does not contribute much to air pollution. Moreover, LPG is non-toxic and free of tetra-ethyl lead additives.

UN international panel has recognized LPG as efficient energy and a better alternative to petrol. It is not only a better alternative to petrol, but also it is even better than CNG.

    No adulteration

One of the biggest drawbacks of using petrol in vehicles is adulteration. Diesel is usually adulterated with kerosene which makes it more toxic during combustion and reduces its octane rating, the rating that measures how likely petroleum can self-ignite.

If you ask could LPG be adulterated? It is almost impossible. It is transported across India in sealed cylinders directly from the filing plants, this ensures there are zero scopes of adulteration.

    Fuel Cost

The rate of fuel is soaring high. Recently, the price of fuel has gone up to 100rupees per liter. To keep the vehicle and finance on track, LPG is a better alternative. In terms of the cost of fuel, LPG costs little more than half the price of petrol and diesel. This means you can go more miles per gallon. The average price of Auto LPG per year is less than the price of petrol.

    Comparison in Performance

LPG is good for automobiles. It is a cleaner burner fuel and produces little residue and does not cause any harm to the fuel tank and does not damage the engine. It has a high octane value, it ignites faster implying no knocking for pre-ignition. LPG vehicle ignites faster even when the engine is completely cold.

    Lowers Maintenance Cost

LPG gas is a cleaner fuel and does not leave any residue in the fuel tank, this reduces the need for servicing. LPG do not leave acid or carbon deposit in the engine. Moreover, LPG is corrosion-free fuel this is why it does not damage the engine, reducing the need for maintenance of the engine.
